Help them feed us
Food security is one of the global challenges which affects us all. According to the World Bank our food demand is projected to rise by at least 20 percent globally over the next 15 years1). The same report highlights Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and East Asia as the main regions affected by this demand, nonetheless, food security is an issue which is equally important to Europe. Within the EU the agriculture sector and farmers are faced with new challenges every day; from feeding an expanding global population while meeting strict new emissions requirements, to producing more food affected by climate change while minimizing their environmental footprint.
“There is an EU instrument supporting agriculture and forestry research and innovation: Horizon 2020”
Water scarcity and drought was one of the main environmental policy priorities for the EU Presidency of Portugal in 20072). Droughts have noticeable economic impacts on a range of important economic sectors, particularly agriculture, and they affect significant shares of the population and the territory of the EU. Some sectors, including agriculture, are affected for some time (years) after the drought has passed.
There is an EU instrument supporting agriculture and forestry research and innovation: Horizon 2020. Many other EU policies addressing innovation and skills development in general can also contribute to agricultural research and innovation.
Horizon 2020 is the EU's framework programme for Research and Innovation for 2014-2020 with a total funding pot of Euro 80 billion. The three areas of focus are:
- Excellent science
- Industrial leadership
- Societal challenges
All three include opportunities for agricultural research and innovation, the main one being societal challenges.
